“On an expedition, perhaps we need a few ‘Are we there yet?’ moments to fully savour the reward of eventually reaching our goal. And perhaps being fit for the journey helps ensure those moments don’t sour into ‘We’re never going to get there!’ moments” - Edwin Fawcett
In a culture that prizes speed and instant gratification, the cliché “it’s not the destination, it’s the journey” can ring hollow. Perseverance and bravery are rendered redundant by convenience and comfort. Why hope for what I can have now?
Let’s tie our laces by taking the risk of committing to a goal, a route, and companions on the way. Let’s pack our rucksacks with plenty of encouragement - and then, setting off, let’s sing marching songs!
Strength and courage free us to focus on the blessings of our inevitable pilgrimages.
